Hula Skirts
Labor Day has come and gone! The pools have closed and the schools have opened.
There’s something quite sad about the end of summer. However, I think there is still time for a little more summer fun.
What could be more fun than a luau and what do you think of when you think of a luau.
How about grass hula skirts.
This is how it begins. Just a simple shape.
If you don’t have this exact shape, be creative. This wasn’t the shape I started out with either.
Maybe you have the Wilton Christmas cutters with the present.
Simply use a knife to cut off the bow, or use a girl wearing a a dress cutter and just cut the skirt part off.
Look at your cutters for their shape and not necessarily what they were made to be.
One cutter can take you a long way with a little imagination.
I love these cookies, because they didn’t have to be so perfect.
Ordinarily, I would be obsessing about straight lines and messy blobs, but grass skits should look messy.
If they look messy, then they are perfect!
So here’s messy.
Add a line of icing at the top.
Then follow with lines draping down to form the skirt. Now, while the icing is still wet add a candy flower, or two.
Simply let this dry for about 5-10 minutes then add more lines in between. This will allow for the dimension of the grass.
I used several colors of green and yellow. Again, not worrying about perfection.
(I have to keep reminding myself of this)
Now it’s starting to look like something.
Let keep going…
Once you’ve added all your lines these will begin to take shape!
To top it all off we added some other cookies to our luau theme.
Here’s a sneak peek …
I hope these cookies inspire you to have a last fling with summer.
